Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
This spring, the Boyd County University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension hosted a successful Market Lamb Showmanship Clinic that brought together enthusiastic 4-H youth from across the county. Held at the Boyd County Education Center, the clinic provided young livestock exhibitors with hands-on learning opportunities to build both their knowledge and confidence in caring for and showing market lambs.
Participants engaged in a combination of classroom-style instruction and hands-on demonstrations. The clinic began with an educational session on proper feeding strategies, daily care routines, and health maintenance essential for growing healthy, competitive lambs. Extension agents and experienced showmen guided youth through best practices for nutrition, handling, and monitoring animal health.
The highlight of the day came when youth moved to the show ring for an in-depth session on showmanship. Each participant had the opportunity to work directly with lambs to practice setting up and bracing—key skills for success in the show ring. Instructors provided one-on-one coaching, helping youth learn how to control and present their animals with confidence and poise.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
10 individuals participated in the lamb clinic. All were involved as volunteers or enrolled in the Boyd County 4-H Livestock Club.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact.
Following the clinic participants were able to set up and brace lambs independently.
