Garden Shed Herb Day Leads to Increased Speaking Requests and Sales

Author: Lori Bowling

Planning Unit: Boyd County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Best Management Practices in Home Horticulture

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

A local entrepreneur who has created and markets a line a herbal products has increased their speaking engagements and product sales by at least 50% since guest speaking at the Boyd County Garden Shed Herb Day in 2024.  With the increased interest in many individuals looking to decrease additives and preservatives not only in their food but also in their beauty products and every day living, a local entrepreneur captured many individuals attention when they were the guest speaker at the Herb Day event a year ago.  Since that speaking engagement they have been asked to speak to gardening enthusiasts from as far north at New York and as far south as Florida.  This gardener started at an early age learning about herbs and herbal products but it wasn't until they got involved with the Kentucky Master Gardner program that they realized they needed to change some of their growing practices. Taking the knowledge they learned in the Master Gardening classes and becoming involved in Extension programs lead to them becoming more comfortable with public speaking and more confident in the subject of growing herbs.  After their presentation at the 2024 Garden Shed Herb day word quickly started to spread that this gardener turned entrepreneur was very knowledgeable about growing herbs and about their many uses.  They increased their herbal product line and has increased their sales of the products from not only supplying local outlets but also small retail outlets in most of the eastern half of the United States.
