Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to Feeding America, Lawrence County has a food insecurity rate of 17.3%. This alarming statistic means that 2,750 individuals do not know where their next meal is coming from. Lawrence County Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Assistant partnered with Louisa Elementary Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC) Coordinator to educate parents who qualify for a free Thanksgiving basket. The educational programs consisted of nutrition, food safety, food security, food management and the importance of exercise. The EFNEP Assistant conducted seven lessons from the Healthy Choices for Everybody Curriculum. Nine parents participated with a total of forty five family members. As a result, 100% of participants showed improvement in one or more food resource management practices. Additionally, 100% eat fruit more often each day, 88% drink fruit drinks, sweet tea or sports drinks less often and 100% made small changes to be active more often. Evaluations also found that 100% of participants thaw frozen food at room temperature less often and 100% use a meat thermometer more often.
