4-H Windowsill Garden Project

Author: Joshua Turner

Planning Unit: Harlan County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Improve and sustain agriculture production

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In Harlan County, KY, many students in grades K-4 through 6th face challenges related to food insecurity and limited access to fresh, nutritious food. Additionally, there is a disconnect between students and nature, with limited opportunities for hands-on learning about agriculture, sustainability, and healthy eating. These issues highlight the need for educational programs that engage young people in learning about food production and healthy lifestyles, while also fostering environmental stewardship.

The 4-H Windowsill Gardening Program was introduced to address these challenges by providing K-4 through 6th grade students with the opportunity to learn about plant growth, healthy eating, and environmental care through hands-on gardening activities. Students were given materials and guidance to plant and care for tomato plants in their classrooms, allowing them to observe the process of growth and understand the importance of fresh food. The program also aimed to foster life skills such as responsibility and patience. Partners in the program included local schools and community organizations, helping to ensure its reach and impact.

The program engaged 2003 youth and 182 adults in Harlan County, KY. The youth participants ranged from K-4 through 6th grade students who were directly involved in the gardening activities. Adults, including myself, Lisa, my program assistant, teachers and aides supported the program by assisting with the tomato plants, providing mentorship, and helping to reinforce the educational concepts presented through the program.

Informal follow-up with students and teachers after the 4-H Windowsill Gardening Program showed strong evidence of learning and enthusiasm. Many students were able to recall the three basic needs of a plant—sunlight, water, and soil—shortly after the lesson and demonstrated a clear understanding of plant care. Teachers reported that students were highly engaged, often checking on their tomato plants daily and showing excitement as the plants began to grow.

Several students shared that they were interested in starting their own gardens at home, and some mentioned that they had done so the previous year. Those students reported that their tomato plants continued to grow throughout the summer, with some reaching up to seven feet tall and producing tomatoes all season long. This kind of feedback not only reflected the educational impact of the program but also showed how it encouraged continued learning and healthy habits outside of the classroom.
