Greenup County Schools- Wurtland Elementary and Middle School hosted Agsplosion Day is an event about recognizing and celebrating the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives as well as celebrating Agriculture Education Week in Kentucky. It is a great way to educate local youth about the importance of agriculture, even when they don’t realize it.
This year’s event was tailored for students from kindergarten through 8th grade from both Wurtland Elementary and Wurtland Middle School. The schools will be combining to create the Greenup County School of Innovation in the Fall 2026. This was the first collaboration event of its kind for these schools. Local volunteers from the Greenup County Cooperative Extension Service, Farm Bureau, community organizations, farm stores, FFA chapter and community members with knowledge and skill shared their passion through thirty rotations that educated students about a variety of agriculture. The rotations featured forestry (planting trees around the school), beekeeping, planting seedlings, dairy production and butter making, and many others.
All agriculture participants “brought the farm” to the school in the Greenup County Middle School field between the two schools. Additional stations were housed inside the school to accommodate the weather that day. A total of 415 students attended Agsplosion Day this year. In addition, there were 34 volunteers who helped educate the students about Agriculture. The local news station- WSAZ (see first picture) was on scene to promote the activities of the day as well as one of the local radio stations.
