Major Program: Family Development General

Plan of Work: Develop Life Skills & Promote Family Cohesion

Outcome: Initial Outcome

For the 2020-2021 program year, most citizens of Bath County were still sheltering in place. Seven percent of citizens living in Bath County are under the age of five. The statistics for kindergarten readiness is currently 30 percent. Because so few students are prepared for Kindergarten, the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent and the Preschool Advisory Council collaborated on offering virtual programming for students in Bath and Menifee counties.

The FCS Agents in Bath and Menifee counties hosted a virtual learning series - Stories, Songs, and Stretches - through the public libraries in each county. The agents recorded videos that featured mediation, yoga poses, stories, and other activities. Each week, when the videos were released families, were invited to pick up learning materials that go along with the lessons. Participants were given learning manipulatives such as busy books, literacy books, and other activities that center on learning.

While the program reached over 100 views per video, several more families picked up the learning activities through the four-session program. Half of the families participated in two of the four sessions. Many families loved having something they could focus on when at home during the pandemic. One family stated, "We have incorporated the busy book into our nightly bedtime routine. Thank you so much!"

Other activities occurred throughout the year to support individual and family learning. Several of the programs on the go supported early education and literacy.
