Plan of Work: Youth Agriculture Education

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Livestock Projects are some of the longest-running and easily identifiable aspects of 4-H.  These projects range in all sizes and can work for families with lots of space or acreage and for those with limited space or acreage.  In Campbell County, these projects include both market and breeding beef, goats, sheep and swine.

To ensure that Kentucky 4-H members have a full and well rounded educational experience in the livestock projects, volunteers working with these project areas are required to be certified and project members must complete at least 6 hours of education either from or approved by these volunteers.  This promotes positive relationships with caring adults.  Campbell County currently has 6 certified livestock volunteers.  This past year 42 youth completed a combined total of 350 educational hours which averages to 8.3 hours per youth.  As a result, our youth are more aware of all livestock species not just what they raise or show.  Also, our youth are required to complete record books for the fair which serve as good evaluation tools.  In their project record books and project stories our youth reported gaining life skills such as sportsmanship and self confidence by showing their animals as well as decision making skills when participating in judging events and when selecting their project animals.  The majority of the youth reported learning or gaining responsibility by caring for their animals.  Marketing skills were also developed and demonstrated when time for the livestock auction at the Alexandria Fair because each member is required to make contact with at least 3 potential buyers and invite them to the sale.  The 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction at the 2017 Alexandria Fair grossed over $39,000.  This money came from over 100 businesses and individuals who dug deep to help support our youth.
