Social Media in the Time of Corona

Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Until this year, social media efforts in the Bullitt County Extension Horticulture Program have been a supplemental resource. Since the Corona Virus emerged placing a temporary end to in person meetings, social media outreach has become a key component in communicating to the citizens of Bullitt County.  As a program, we have spent a large amount of time during the Corona Virus shut down creating original content for social media including articles, newsletters, videos and photo highlights, covering topics such as: lawn care, fruit production, container gardening and plant identification.

Our social media platforms primarily consist of Facebook and YouTube. The Facebook page has been in use for several years.  The YouTube Channel is new.  We create original videos to post to YouTube and then shared them to Facebook. Additionally we have created playlists of videos we have hand selected from researched based sources and have organized them for optimal convenience of our followers. We update the video collection regularly with content that we believe is relevant and helpful to our client base.

Since February the number of likes on our Facebook page has gone from 480 to 606, an increase of 26% over the last 5 months.  During that time, the number of people who have interacted with our Facebook page (Unique Users) totals:24,486 and the total number of people in our community that have had our information on their screens totals 44,826.  In the last two months we have posted 50 original posts (that we researched, filmed and created just for social media) and shared 118 posts from other professional organizations and Extension offices.  As we continue to develop our social media presence, our Extension program will continue to grow and reach new audiences.
