Graves County 4-H Starts Livestock Club

Plan of Work: Promoting 4-H in Graves County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This year for the first time in recent memory, Graves County has started a 4-H Livestock Club under the volunteer leadership of Certified Livestock Volunteer Matthew Dowdy. Graves County is a very agricultural county and tops all other counties in total agricultural sales--with over 346 million dollars in agricultural receipts. The next county in second place brought in 215 million. Because of the county's makeup, a 4-H Livestock program was considered a high-priority need by the Extension District Board and the County Extension Council.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the club has been able to enroll several families and provide education both virtually and by mail. Using Livestock Show safety guidelines, plans are still in place to hold the Purchase District Fair Shows. Youth are also planning a Fair Preparation meeting outdoors using social distancing. Many of the 4-H families have also branched out into other areas of 4-H education during the pandemic, utilizing Brown Bag Programs and the 4-H Olympic opportunities.
