Plan of Work: Basic Life Skills for Youth and Adults in Scott County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

When Covid-19 struck and programs were asked to come to a halt to all in person programming. 4-H Youth Development Agents had to come up with different ways to interact and reach the youth in their county. Scott County 4-H Youth Development Agent along with other 4-H agents in the District started a virtual 4-H Baking Challenge on Facebook. The Scott County 4-H Youth Development Agent provided recipes for beginners and advanced bakers each week for seven weeks via the Scott County 4-H Facebook page. The recipes that were implemented were from the Kentucky State Fair 4-H Recipes. Over 20 youth participated in the virtual 4-H Baking Challenge. Youth were able to submit their baking project through their parent/guardians Facebook and were asked to tag Scott County 4-H and use the following hashtags #scottcobakes #Kentucky4HBakes. Each week the 4-H Youth Development Agent shared each youths participation on the Scott County 4-H Facebook Page. Youth were divided into Cloverbud, Beginner, and Advanced categories and names were drawn for that week’s winner. Winners of each week received a baking related prize. One parent contacted the Scott County 4-H Youth Development Agent one week stating “This is helping with fractions too.” Covid-19 has been challenging for youth and parents juggling NTI packets, teaching and trying to work. It is great that youth can learn in different ways how to do math while learning life skills in the kitchen that 4-H made possible.
