1 in 3 youth deal with anxiety and 1 in 5 youth deal with depression. Many factors can contribute to mental health such as bullying, home life, friends. We are very fortunate in Scott County that we have an alternative school for middle and high school students. This school allows youth in Scott County with these disorders to be able to continue their education with smaller classrooms, flexible schedules, and ability to allow outside groups to come in and provide positive youth development. Yoga has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety and depression and help increase grades. Scott County 4-H Youth Development Agent was able to meet with Phoenix Horizon Community Principal and a group of youth leaders to discuss curriculum and dates for an ongoing program. The Principal and 4-H Agent agreed on 10, 1 hour sessions that would implement the 4-H Curriculum Yoga for Kids executed by the 4-H Youth Development Agent. During the 10 sessions, 8-15 youth along with their teachers participated in Yoga for Kids. Youth and teachers were able to learn how to clear their mind through breathing exercises, learn Yoga poses, and become more active. At the end of the 10 sessions youth were give an evaluation of the program. This program reached a total of 19 youth and 5 teachers in Scott County and has open doors for further program partnerships with the school and Scott County Extension Office.
