Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Protecting the Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Every April, nearly 300 youth in Harrison County attend North Central 4-H Environmental Education Camp.  With the Covid-19 outbreak changing educational methods and programming, volunteers and community partners worked to provide an experience that would adapt to current social distancing and sta-at-home regulations.  Harrison County Soil Conservation and 4-H prepared 225 Environmental Education Kits, distributing them through the Harrison County Exntension Office, local schools with the food pick-up program, churches, and mailbox delivery.   The goal was to re-create a similar experience for kids who were not able to attend 4-H Environmental Education Camp this spring.  The kit included lesson instructions, support materials, and all supplies needed for nearly 12 different projects and field studies.  Some activies included an owl pellet kit, "Soil Sam" to study grass growth, drone discovery gliders, soil erosion materials, star constellation booklets and activities, mammal and wildlife identification and scavenger hunt materials, as well as several science experiements.  Youth were encouraged to post involvement and project progress on our Harrison County 4-H social media options.  One family even mentioned, "This kit was just what was needed in a time of sadness, our family has really enjoyed these activities!"  All 225 kits were distributed to youth in Harrison County.  This program has been a part of continual project and education efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in the disrtribution of over 1,000 educational kits.
