Wood Science

Author: Joyce Doyle

Planning Unit: Carroll County CES

Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Adult and Youth Leadership

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Because our wood science project was so successful last year, the leader led an advanced wood working project.

Last year Carroll County added a wood science project and it was very successful.  The students learned:

•           to  Identify wood by bark, wood color, and aroma

to Classify wood as soft or hard in order to make decisions about end use.

to Select wood for their walking cane project

to Demonstrate proper use and safety with hand tools

to Designing and creating a walking cane that can be entered in as many as three categories of county/state fair (their next project will be a wooden box with inlay

to Recognize the relationship of trees to support different categories of birds and insects

From this project, four items went to the state fair and all received blue ribbons. This year we expanded the wood science workshops to include making wood bowls.   The students were excited to take a piece of wood and make an item for their home.  They started with a piece of a tree and designed a bowl,   They used a saw, sander, and varnish and came up with a unique wood item.  Two of the students are members of our entrepreneur program and are going to the Kentucky Volunteer Forum with wood projects to sell .  We have advanced to the intermediate outcome and next year hopefully will be in the long term outcome.
