Joint Safety Day

Author: Heather Graham

Planning Unit: Wolfe County CES

Major Program: Healthy and Safety for Ag Producers/Workers

Plan of Work: Beef & Forages

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

For two years, the Wolfe Co ANR Agent has partnered with Wolfe Co Farm Bureau to offer a Farm/Home Safety Field Day. This year, in an effort to reach more people and use resources wisely, Wolfe Co and Breathitt Co ANR Agents and Farm Bureaus collaborated for a joint Safety Program. The Field Day was held at the Robinson Center in Jackson, KY. Topics for the evening included: chainsaw safety, the importance of staying hydrated, rollover tractor safety, PTO safety, and how to safely load and haul farm equipment on the road. Attendees all received a goodie bag filled with various items to promote safety (i.e. sunscreen, safety glasses, etc.). All attendees also received a free meal served by Wolfe Co FFA. Bouncy houses were provided for children in attendance to promote physical activity, and to keep children entertained in a safe manner while the adults were able to attend sessions.

Before door prizes were awarded, participants were asked to raise their hand if they, or someone they know, had directly been affected by a farming accident. Over 80% indicated that they had been impacted. When asked if they had learned at least one safety lesson from the sessions that they could apply to their life, 100% indicated that they had. All door prizes promoted safety in the home and on the farm (ie slow moving vehicle signs, chainsaw chaps, and fire extinguishers).

With close to 150 people in attendance, this event was a huge success and plans are already in place for the 2020 event to be held in Wolfe Co!
