Budding Interest

Planning Unit: Wolfe County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Beef & Forages

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In the spring of 2019, a Wolfe Co. High School student approached the ANR agent and indicated that he was interested in learning more about farming and raising cattle. The agent put him in contact with a local beef producer so that he could get some hands-on experience. The student would help on the farm with various tasks, including square baling hay and working cattle. He even has learned the proper way to give shots and how to put in ear tags. His interest in cattle grew and he began talking about starting his own herd. In early 2020, several counties came together for a Master Cattlemen program. This young student came to each class, and brought his father, who had no farming/cattle background, along with him. After each session, on their car ride home, the father son pair would discuss what they had learned in the class. They would even do more reading and research when they got home. The student's mom has made a point, several times, to tell the ANR agent how excited they both sound when they talk about what they learned in the class and how they feel confident enough to talk about cattle to lifelong cattle producers. The family has recently been able to take over some family land and have received a Farm Serial Number and are looking into various programs to help them get started in the cattle business. The student will be attending college this fall and is going to get a degree in Agriculture, previously he had said he was going to get a degree in forestry. At a time when the average age of the American farmer is ever increasing, it's encouraging to see a young person interested in agriculture and taking the steps to start their own operation.
