       Hunger in the Summer

The Kentucky Association of Food Banks statistics state 22% of youth in Kentucky (1 in 6) struggle with hunger every day. With this issue in mind, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture Food and Environment, Cooperative Extension Service, Perry County office combined efforts with the Perry County School District to help feed the hungry youth in Perry County through the Summer Feeding program. The Summer Feeding program has vans that deliver lunches throughout Perry County. Knowing this the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-ED)Senior Assistant knowing one area in that was being under served, worked with the Summer Feeding program to get the feeding program started at one local church. The van serves lunches consistent with My Plate nutritional guidelines. The SNAP-ED Senior Assistant delivered dinners and distributed recipes and nutrition information. This program feeds from 150 to 200 youth in this immediate area. Helping to combat hunger in the summer.
