Major Program: Trail Design

Plan of Work: Developing and Empowering Community Leaders for Engagement

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Johnson County Extension Homemakers Environmental chair selected the Paintsville Lake "Outdoor Classroom" as the county's main project for 2018-24. The goal was to create an edible trail, repair a former shed, create a pollinator field and teach environmental classes to the public to hep enhance understanding of the world around us. In 2018, we also gained the state's KEHA International chair, who also prioritized the reduction of plastics and constructive uses for "throwaway materials" in an effort to increase understanding of the issues and create strategies to solve problems worldwide. The two chairs, united their themes locally, creating united goals for environmental programs. KEHA also has an International objective in the Philippines, where a family there will mirror our building efforts in their community. The FCS agent, met with the Army Corp of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife, Boy Scouts and the Homemaker chairs to help devise a united plan to create a learning center to be used for the public's environmental educational efforts. The Paintsville Lake Environmental Interpretive Center resulted in the effort. A state FCS Grant was received to help create storage unit to house teaching tools at the center, and FCS continues to move forward with repairs, the eco build and planting the pollinator field. Each agency is bringing something to the table as we progress, but a firm team with objectives have been outlined, while volunteers work together to complete the goals.
