Major Program: Commercial Horticulture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Jake Shadowen contacted the extension associate in early 2017 expressing an interest in expanding his family garden into a roadside stand outside a local retail shop for 2018. Materials and equipment supplied by the Kentucky Horticulture Council aided in doubling the vegetable production area along with the inclusion of annual plasticulture strawberries. Sales will begin in May with strawberries with mixed vegetables shortly thereafter. Becoming a cooperator provided the opportunity to compare the use of two different plastic mulch layers, a Rainflo model 2600 series II and a Kennco mini combo, allowing Mr. Shadowen to become more informed of the different options if he decides to buy equipment for himself.  Mr. Shadowen has consulted with the extension associate on cover cropping, weed management, and crop suitability for next year with a goal of accomplishing earlier market sales and higher prices. The extension associate also provided ongoing guidance in fall management of plasticulture strawberries. Late winter/early spring frost/freeze protection is often confusing to new strawberry growers and can significantly affect the success of a planting. Continued site visits and email contacts between the extension associate and Mr. Shadowen to monitor plant growth and weather conditions in late winter/early spring 2018 will create the best opportunity to make informed management decisions during this critical season. Further aid in selecting and accomplishing the earliest sales of high value crops will also contribute to the success of Mr. Shadowen’s planting.
