The Cooking Lady
“HEY THERE’S THE COOKING LADY”!!!! “DID YOU BRING US FOOD TO EAT”!!! That’s how you know the Nutrition Education Program through the local Cooperative Extension Office is making a difference; when a group of 3rd grade classes asked if healthy food and snacks were brought for sampling. And if that wasn’t enough letters were wrote describing how enjoyable the WIN curriculum was (Wellness IN Kentucky). The kids learned how important it was to eat a variety of all five food groups and proper moderation of the food. The importance of being physically active. The kids were also given reinforcement items like jump ropes, Frisbees’, and kites. Encouraging the kids to get up and exercise and also involve other family and friends to participate. Kids sampled different types of milk. And learned the importance of calcium to growing bodies. Kids learned the original fast food was not McDonald’s but fruit and vegetables! Each week the kids couldn’t wait to tell the “Cooking Lady” of all the exciting ways they and their family had chosen to be healthier. “I used my water bottle and filled it up instead of drinking a coke”. “I started a food journal with my mom, to make sure not to eat too many sweet.” “I played Frisbee with my brother and the dog instead of playing PS4.” “My favorite food was the fruit smoothie thank you for making it.”
