Friends & Companions

Author: Kellie Miller

Planning Unit: Knox County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Friends & Companions is an adult Day Health Care provider who provide care for frail, physically or mentally challenged family members who are no longer able to maintain independence. Part of their services include establishing goals for each participant to help maintain or improve their current level of function. In order to maintain this goal Kay invited me to teach nutrition to her participants. To help Kay meet this goal I taught her participants Healthy Choices For Everybody.

Upon completing this program families showed changes in the following areas:

  • All participants eat fruit more often each day
  • 50% of participants eat vegetables more often each day
  • 50% of participants eat red and orange vegetables more often each week
  • 50% of participants eat dark green vegetables more often each week
  • 50% of participants exercise for at least 30 minutes more days a week
  • 50% of participants plan meals before shopping more often

The most memorable moment from this class is when a participant stopped me and let me know she gave the MyPlate to her sister (This participant lives with her sister) and the Sister hung the magnet on the fridge and began planning their meals based upon the magnet given to them.
