Sewing camps are more than needles and thread. Learning basic sewing skills provides youth with not only an ability to do basic alterations on their clothing but also allows them to practice motor skills, follow directions, learn patience, engage creatively, and practice communication skills. With the support of our Knox County Extension Homemaker volunteers, 4-H & FCS Agent and program assistant, Sewing Camp 101 has taught approximately 50 youth basic sewing skills. This year, youth began with building a bear and learning to hand sew 2 and 4-hole buttons. Then, youth learned the basics of the sewing machine including learning of the parts of a machine, how to thread it and navigate any problems that occur. The final project was a pillow that youth can enter at the Kentucky State Fair. As a result of the program:
- 70% of youth used a sewing machine for the first time.
- 100% completed at least two sewing projects.
- 100% followed a clear set of directions and instruction from their leader
- 72% met someone new
- 60% are involved in other 4-H programs
- A previous participant has began a business of making pillows and has made more than $500.
