Author: Cindy Maggard

Planning Unit: Knott County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the state of Kentucky is 31.6% obese.  The Nutrition Education Program in Knott County teaches low income families about nutrition and how to budget their money.  Teaching these families how to eat properly and budget for it can lower the obesity rate in Kentucky.

The CDC reports that 46.2% of Kentuckians eat less than one time daily the recommended amount of fruit.  It also reports that 24.9% eat less than one time daily of the recommended amount of vegetables.

As an incentive item for attending the Healthy Choices for Everybody classes that the Knott County Extension Office NEP Assistant teaches, each person got a portioned my plate to take home.  As a result of taking it home one lady said her child thought it was very colorful and she wanted something to eat that was those colors.  She had since started eating like that several times a week and had been eating more fruits and vegetables and trying new ones that she come to like.
