A Positive Kitchen

Author: Susan Grimmett

Planning Unit: Boyd County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

A Positive Kitchen

The majority of Kentuckians do not know how to eat healthy or the proper proportions of each food

Group which has lead to 1/3 of all Kentuckians being obese.   The SNAP-Ed assistant partnered with the

local library to teach Healthy Choices adult curriculum

By applying the information, the entire class gained information of how prepare meals properly and eat the

correct proportion. They also prepared the no salt spice blend and took home a sample with eagerness to

make healthier meals in particular breakfast.

One participant has stated she is now using something she has learned in every class.  She now

makes a grocery list and only buys what is on her list.  She has begun doing physical activity and lost 5

pounds during the first 3 weeks of the class.

Prior to the beginning of the classes, it was a burden to prepare meals for only herself,

she now prepares meals using the MyPlate magnet on her refrigerator to insure she is eating from the

food groups and, the proper proportions.

One participant commented that preparing meals caused great difficulty and through the class she now

feels she gets the proper nutrients and “going into the kitchen and cooking is now a positive

experience”.
