~~The Barren River Area Safe Space, Inc. (BRASS) is a regional domestic violence 26-bed shelter and program. BRASS serves Warren County Citizens by providing emergency shelter and support services to victims of domestic violence. After doing once a month program at the shelter, one of the SNAP Ed Assistants from the Warren County Cooperative Extension Service was contacted by the director. The SNAP Ed Assistant was asked to do a program for the staff who works at the shelter. Many of the staff struggled with preparing healthy recipes for themselves and for the women who live at the shelter. They also had poor food safety practices. A series on Nutrition Education presented by The Healthy Choices for Every Body Curriculum was taught by the Warren County SNAP Ed Assistant. The series focused on teaching staff members how to create healthy meals, maintain food safety practices, and learn money saving tips. Classes included cooking demonstrations, hands on practice of food preparation, and encouraged individuals to practice proper food safety practices.75% of class participants showed improvement in demonstrating acceptable nutrition practices such as; planning meals ahead of time, making healthy food choices, and preparing foods without adding salt. 83% showed improvement in following the recommended practice of not thawing foods at room temperature. The staff expressed that they plan to use the knowledge they learned from the series, to create a healthier environment within the shelter.
