The Migrant Program

Author: Kristi Shive

Planning Unit: Administration - Cooperative Extension Service

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Life Skill Development 2025

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Many refuge families settle in the United States, unaware of the resources around them. The Bowling Green Migrant Program asked Kristi Shive, Warren County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, to come and speak at their Fall Parent Advisory Council Meeting. Kristi shared about the Warren County Cooperative Extension Office and showcased the variety of services offered by the Cooperative Extension Office, emphasizing how these resources could directly benefit the families in attendance.

Kristi also did a presentation on nutrition education. She introduced the MyPlate dietary guidelines, the Plan Eat Move website, and handed out materials for parents to take home. Recognizing the diverse background of the families present, Kristi tailored her presentation to resonate with both African and Hispanic cultures, ensuring the content was relevant and accessible. Translators were provided, making it possible for everyone to understand the material.

Verbal feedback from the attendees showed in increase in nutrition education and food safety. Two parents reported plans to attend cooking classes at the Warren County Cooperative Extension Office. The collaboration between Kristi and the Migrant Program empowered families to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
