Four local schools are a part of the Prichard Committee Community Schools Initiative. “Through trusting relationships and well-coordinated supports, community schools ensure that students receive the health, social service, and learning opportunities they need to be successful.” (https://prichardcommittee.org/community-schools-initiative/). Each school uses state and community needs assessment to determine where the gaps are within their school and community. The schools are then tasked with creating a Community School Action Plan which shows how they will use the funding they receive as part of this initiative to address the identified gaps. One of these gaps was drug prevention and education. Vaping education is a program targeted towards middle schoolers. Once a quarter, the 4-H agent went into the sixth grade Family and Consumer Sciences classes and presented a 45-minute program on the chemicals in vape clouds/juices, side effects of using vapes, reasons for vaping, along with giving students the opportunity to ask questions. Over the course of the school year, one hundred and eighty-eight students received this program. After the program youth are asked to complete a survey. 70% of youth reported they could explain why youth may try vaping, 75% of youth reported they could name a side effect of using vapes, and 97% of youth learned some new information when it comes to vaping.
