Patchwork Playdates

Author: Cathy Sparks

Planning Unit: Magoffin County CES

Major Program: Child Development General

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Magoffin County has only one licensed day care in the community and very few opportunities for pre-school age children to participate in educational and fun activities. Patchwork Playdates uses the state adopted Laugh and Learn curriculum provided by the University of Kentucky to conduct monthly activities for the children.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

Laugh and Learn curriculum is used for the educational components of Patchwork Playdates. There is always a music component, book or story, craft, nutritious snack gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and free play time.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

The audience is pre-school age children birth-5 years of age.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

The Patchwork Playdates program currently has about 15 regular participants ranging in age from 8 weeks old to 5 years of age. Each child is accompanied either by a parent or grandparent for the activities.  It gives the children the opportunity to practice social skills, preparation for school attendance, educational and fun activities and gives the parents an opportunity to learn new ways to interact with their children to provide them with much-needed child development skills.
