Describe the Issue or Situation.
The incidence of cancer in the Eastern part of Kentucky is significantly higher than other parts of the state. Breast cancer awareness and education about early screening and detection has been proven to save lives of women in the United States. Therefore, our homemakers have chosen to make it a priority each year to host a luncheon, providing education for people in the community about screening and prevention.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
This year we had an enormous turnout of participants. We had Dr. Rebecca Baker as our guest speaker, from Versailles, KY. She started a non-profit organization in memory of her mother, Betty, called Betty's Brave and Beautiful Heart Organization. The group provides items that assist and give comfort to ladies undergoing surgery and chemotherapy after a diagnosis of breast cancer. The Homemakers made a beautiful Pink Ribbon quilt to use as a prize in a drawing among Breast Cancer Survivors.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
There were 120 guests for the luncheon made up of men and women who are either seeking education, are survivors or families of survivors. We recognized two families whose mothers and wives had passed away from breast cancer and were the first to start the Cancer Relay for Life in Magoffin County and organize a Cancer Support Group for anyone with a cancer diagnosis and undergoing treatment. When evaluations were collected, 50% of those in attendance stated that they had gained information which would help them in their quest to remain healthy and cancer free.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
