Describe the Issue or Situation.
Linking an extension teaching DOE can be a challenge. Bringing the industry to the classroom or the classroom to industry is both challenging and rewarding. For several years I have taught EQM 340 Equine Facility Design and Management. Recently a student from the class approached me regarding providing advice on a facility they wanted to develop in Fayette County. The aim was to build a showcase Hunter Jumper facility that would house personal horses along with outside boarders. The facility has housing for 40 horses in three barns, an indoor and outdoor arenas, an equine equicizer and round pen, paddocks, pastures (also used as hay fields). my role was to be an advisor as construction of the main facility was underway along with layout of paddocks and using pastures for hay production. The facility is nearing completion and horses are in residence. Hay production has been successful the last two years as are the other management practices.
There have been many discussions on placement of paddocks, field herbicide and fertilization needs, forage testing and manure management.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
This has been effort on a single enterprise, but it is hoped that equine extension programing related to facilities and hay production will be held in the future.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
This is a family operation/project, and it is hoped that in the future other educational activities will take place on this operation.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
Impact is limited but the statement from one of the principles in this project follows:
Your guidance and advice were invaluable to us throughout this process. We would be thrilled for this to highlight the importance and incredible support that extension specialists provide.
