June 2025 — Carter County, KY — The Carter County?4-H?Council is?proud to announce a major fundraising milestone: over $13,000 raised to support 4-H Camp scholarships for local youth. This effort is particularly meaningful given the significant economic challenges faced by the community.
Carter County by the Numbers
Nearly 20% of residents live in poverty (19.2–19.6%)
One in four children in Carter County grows up below the poverty line (≈25.2%)
These rates exceed Kentucky’s average poverty rate of ~16.1–16.9%
Among Kentucky’s counties, Carter ranks as one of the highest in poverty, around 30% in 2021
These sobering numbers illustrate why scholarship assistance for summer programs like 4-H Camp isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential.
Impact on Local Youth
Thanks to this community effort:
Dozens of children from low-income families can now attend 4-H Camp who might otherwise have missed out.
Camp provides crucial experiential learning: fostering leadership, confidence, environmental stewardship, teamwork, and lifelong friendships.
Especially in a county where 1 in 5 residents faces financial hardship, these opportunities are transformative.
