Plan of Work: Basic Life Skill Education
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
This summer, 146 young Cloverbuds from across 13 Kentucky counties gathered for an enriching and fun-filled experience at Cloverbud Camp and Nicholas County proudly sent 18 campers to be part of it. With 9 boys and 9 girls representing the county, these young 4-H members had the chance to explore the outdoors, make new friends, and begin building lifelong skills all in a safe and nurturing camp setting.
Cloverbud Camp is a unique opportunity designed specifically for children ages 5 to 8 who are just beginning their 4-H journey. While they may be some of the youngest in the program, the energy and enthusiasm they bring are unmatched. The camp introduces them to the values of Head, Heart, Hands, and Health in a way that’s age-appropriate, engaging, and most importantly FUN.
Campers from Nicholas County took part in a wide variety of hands-on learning activities, including nature walks, canoeing, recreation, tie dye, foods, rocketry, low-ropes, Legos, team-building challenges, and traditional campfire fun. These experiences helped develop key life skills such as communication, teamwork, responsibility, and self-confidence.
For many of these young campers, this was their first time staying away from home, a big milestone at this age. With the help of our caring adult volunteers, teen leaders, and 4-H agents, the campers were guided through each day with patience, encouragement, and support. By the end of camp, many had gained a stronger sense of independence and pride in what they had accomplished.
Nicholas County’s group quickly became an active and engaged part of the camp community. They participated enthusiastically, made new friends from other counties, and helped create an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere for all. Their behavior, excitement, and willingness to try new things did not go unnoticed.
Parents were happy to share how impactful the experience was for their children and even noted how their child returned home more confident, curious, and eager to continue participating in 4-H activities. One parent remarked, “It was amazing to see how much my child grew in just a few days. She came home singing camp songs, talking about her new friends, and already asking when she can go back!”
Cloverbud Camp is a reminder that even the youngest members of 4-H can begin developing essential life skills in meaningful and memorable ways. The experiences and friendships formed at camp are often the starting point of a child’s continued involvement in 4-H, laying the foundation for future leadership and success.
Nicholas County is proud of our18 Cloverbud campers and grateful to the families, volunteers, and leaders who made this experience possible. We look forward to continued participation and growth as more young people discover the joy and impact of being part of the 4-H family.
