Pike County Flood Relief

Author: Chelsea Workman

Planning Unit: Pike County CES

Major Program: Flood Relief & Recovery

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

On the weekend of February 15–16, 2025, Pike County was struck by a devastating flood that displaced numerous families and left the community in urgent need of support. In the face of this crisis, Pike County Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), along with the entire Pike County Extension team, mobilized quickly to address both immediate and long-term needs.

Recognizing the critical importance of public health and safety in the aftermath of a flood, Pike County Extension distributed educational material. The educational information included food safety after a flood, proper cleaning of flood-contaminated clothing, and information on replacing essential documents. These resources were made widely accessible through flood relief distribution sites, the Extension office, and social media platforms.

Beyond education, Pike County Extension was actively involved in hands-on relief efforts. In partnership with organizations such as Mercy Chefs and Operation BBQ Relief, Extension staff helped prepare 3,976 hot meals for flood-affected residents. Extension personnel also played a key role at multiple distribution centers, assisting with the organization and distribution of essential supplies.614
