Hiking for Health- Alpha-gal syndrome
Describe the Issue or Situation.
In 2023, according to the CDC, the state of Kentucky had an adult obesity prevalence rate of 37.7%. This makes Kentucky one of 22 states with an adult obesity rate exceeding 35%. In Kentucky, a significant percentage of adults, particularly older adults, are physically inactive, increasing their risk of various health problems and premature death. In Kentucky 32.8% of adults did not participate in any leisure-time physical activity, this was higher than the national average of 26.3%. Physical inactivity can contribute to the decline in physical function, increase fall risk, and impact mental well-being. With increased physical activity and being outdoors more there is an increased risk of tick bites. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service launched a statewide community initiative to educate hikers, campers, and outdoor workers about alpha-gal syndrome. Alpha-gal syndrome is a type of food allergy, making people allergic to red meat and other products made from mammals, caused by the bite of certain ticks.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
The Letcher County FCS agent and ANR agent offer a Hiking for Health Program that occurs twice per year (spring and fall) with a series of five hikes each season. The first topic of 2025 for the hiking for health series was alpha-gal syndrome. After we discussed and gave handouts on this topic, we had one individual diagnosed (approximately one month later) with alpha-gal syndrome and credited the program in being able to recognize the symptoms.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
A total of of 34 participants attended the five sessions. Participants included a variety of ages (50's-90's) as well as physical activity levels. Participants are interested in increasing their physical activity as well as mental health well-being.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
As well as giving information out on alpha-gal syndrome during the hiking for health program the Letcher County Extension office also provided materials and hosted a webinar for local clientele on the subject. Since we began discussing this topic, we have had two clients diagnosed with alpha-gal and they both credit the materials we provided in helping them understand their condition. These stories show how important our educational efforts are for our clientele’s health and well-being.
