In Lewis County, KY the need for early education in agriculture, heath and farm safety continues to grow as fewer students have direct connections to farming. In April 2025, the 2nd Annual Youth Field Day in Memory of Philip Konopka took place. Over 153 third-grade students gathered for a fun and educational day designed to honor the late Philip Konopka, beloved Lewis County Agriculture Agent and advocate for youth in agriculture. This program offered a diverse array of stations including: Dairy, Sun Safety, Honey Bees, Sun safety, Wildlife, Handwashing, petting zoo, fruit smoothie which was powered by the smoothie bike, and Roll Over Tractor Safety.
The 2nd Annual Youth Field Day was made possible by the incredible support of the community and the efforts of 40 volunteers who gave their time and expertise. Organizers are proud to carry on the legacy of Philip Konopka through this event, ensuring that future generations understand and appreciate the value of agriculture, safety, and lifelong learning. The volunteers that made this Field Day successful were the Mason County Master Gardeners, Rip’s Farm Center, Lewis County Health Department, Kentucky Fish & Wildlife, Dale Dobson with Raising Hope and the Philip Konopka Family for their generous support and contributions to making this event a success.
The event welcomed 153 third-grade students from across Lewis County. Students were guided through each learning station by 40 volunteers, including Master Gardeners, community members and UK Extension Employees
