Adult Country Ham Program
Author: Jessica James
Planning Unit: Henderson County CES
Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General
Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work
Outcome: Initial Outcome
4-H has had the country ham contest for many years and Union and Henderson County thought that it would be a good idea to see if adults would be interested in participating in curing a ham also. With the help of Meacham Ham House in Sturgis, Ky we decided to give this a try. There was a lot of interest immediately and the spots filled up. This is the second year we have had the Adult Country Ham program because of how well it went the first year and participants showed interest in coming back again the next year. There are 9 participants from Henderson County this year and 10 from Union County. They have learned how to cure/salt their ham, what the curing process looks like, along with different ways to fix your country ham. Overall, this has been a great program and participants have asked a lot of questions and learned many new things.
