The Master Gardener program has existed across the United States for decades, providing opportunities for research-based information to be shared within communities. Like many counties in Kentucky, Jefferson County has a rich history of volunteerism and a strong commitment to community improvement. Numerous initiatives and organizations in Louisville focus on making the city a better place through gleaning projects, anti-violence interventions, addiction recovery efforts, and more.

In 2024, approximately 120 certified Master Gardeners in Jefferson County contributed over 6,500 volunteer hours across more than 30 approved project sites.

At the Hildegard House in Butchertown, volunteers have developed and maintained a therapeutic garden for hospice patients, staff, and fellow volunteers. Master Gardeners are passionate about offering their time and expertise in spaces that are often overlooked. A total of 226 volunteer hours were dedicated to nurturing this meaningful and compassionate environment for individuals at the end of their lives.

Another impactful initiative is the Master Gardeners' partnership with the Louisville Free Public Library. Across multiple branches, gardening and horticulture presentations are offered to the public one to three times per week. These “Library Talks” have covered topics such as milk jug germination, seed starting, and garden planning. In total, 370 hours of service were contributed to the development and delivery of these educational sessions.

Through their dedication and outreach, Jefferson County’s Master Gardeners continue to exemplify the power of volunteerism and the value of community-based education. Their work not only enriches the lives of individuals they serve but also fosters a deeper connection between people, nature, and lifelong learning.
