Master Gardener becomes more involved in the community
Author: Mary Dossett
Planning Unit: McCracken County CES
Major Program: Master Gardener
Plan of Work: McCracken County Horticulture Education Outreach
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
During the fall of 2022, I taught a Master Gardener training class. The class started with 20 participants and at the end, I graduated 5 people. Throughout this training I taught topics on pruning, flowers, lawn management, fruit, and much more. This was my first class as an agent, so I was learning as well how to teach the class and acquire speakers. Laurie Salvacion is a Master Gardener that has stayed with the program even after graduating. By doing the Master Gardener class she is now more involved in the community and in the Master Gardener group. She currently holds the Secretary title in the group and has helped with numerous programs.
Recently she helped several other Master Gardeners, who have been around awhile, at a Planting Day for an assisted living facility. This program was taught on National Plant A Flower Day. She has used the information from my Master Gardener training and ran with it! The program had about twenty-five participants. Those who participated currently live or work at The Lakes of Paducah assisted living. This program has a long-term outcome because the residents can use the information they learned and use it year after year when they are planting. I feel since she has graduated the program, this has encouraged Laurie to become more active in the community and has led her to serve others.
