Success StoryHomesteading Series on Jelly and Salsa Making

Homesteading Series on Jelly and Salsa Making

Author: Katie Hughes

Planning Unit: Union County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Hort Programs

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

The homesteading series had different classes throughout the year, to help people learn more about the topics but also be able to do these classes by themselves. This one focus on canning and making jelly and salsa.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

The people that attended these classes learn how to make jelly and salsa and the different steps that went into making them. Also the processes of canning and what needs to be done during those times. I partner up with one of the local farmers market farmers to do this class. They provided all the vegetables and fruit needed to make these products, which came from their farm. So they also talked on how to grow things at home as well for people to understand how to grow what they need for these products at home and not having to rely on the grocery stores for items.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

29 people attended these classes and it was opened for anyone to attend.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

This program provided information on how to grow your own vegetables and fruits and how to can items as well. But also highlighted family farms and teaming up together to do this class with the extension office. I had a person attend these homesteading series classes and said that what they learn from them they were able to create a few items to give to their kids teachers for the holiday as a present.
