Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Community Engagement and Economic Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation

Cynthiana and Harrison County, Kentucky, are well-known for their fall festivities, earning the title of the #1 Fall Destination in the state. To enhance community engagement during the fall season, the Harrison County Extension Office sought new ways to participate in local traditions. After discussions with the Tourism Director, the idea of hosting a Giant Pumpkin Contest emerged, which evolved in its second year to include a Teal Pumpkin Trunk or Treat event for children with food allergies or dietary restrictions. This initiative provided a unique opportunity to educate the community on agriculture, horticulture, and inclusive holiday traditions.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable)

The Harrison County Extension Office collaborated across multiple program areas, including 4-H Youth Development, Horticulture, Agriculture & Natural Resources, and Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS), to plan and execute the event. The program aimed to:

  1. Foster community engagement through a family-friendly event.
  2. Showcase local talent and resources in agriculture and horticulture.
  3. Provide hands-on learning about sustainable gardening and pumpkin cultivation.
  4. Promote an inclusive trunk or treat event for children with dietary restrictions.
  5. Celebrate fall traditions and enhance the county’s reputation as a premier fall destination.

To support these goals, the Extension Office provided free seed packets, along with educational resources from land-grant universities. Social media engagement throughout the growing season encouraged participant involvement. In addition, the Teal Pumpkin Trunk or Treat initiative introduced a safe and inclusive trick-or-treating option.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience

The Giant Pumpkin Contest was open to all community members, while the Trunk or Treat event was specifically for children aged 12 and under. Over 100 households from Harrison County picked up seed packets to participate in the contest. Nearly 100 youth attended the Trunk or Treat, many of whom stayed to celebrate the announcement of the pumpkin contest winners.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact

Through qualitative interviews, participants shared their enthusiasm for the event. Many families engaged in growing pumpkins together, fostering teamwork and learning experiences in agriculture and horticulture. Even those who did not successfully grow a giant pumpkin participated in alternative categories, such as smallest pumpkin, most unique pumpkin, and best teal pumpkin.

The event’s visibility was significantly enhanced through collaboration with the Cynthiana Tourism Department. Promotion included newsletters, social media outreach, local newspaper articles, and radio announcements. The county judge and local city commissioner contributed by facilitating event logistics and judging pumpkin entries, further strengthening community involvement.

Feedback from participants and social media interactions confirmed the event’s success, with community members expressing excitement for its continuation. The Giant Pumpkin Contest and Teal Pumpkin Trunk or Treat have now become anticipated annual events, fostering education, inclusivity, and seasonal celebration in Harrison County. Looking forward, the program may expand further to include additional activities and community partnerships, enhancing its impact for future years.
