Farm Safety Day
Author: Ashley Norton
Planning Unit: Hardin County CES
Major Program: Agriculture
Plan of Work: Progressive Agriculture Safety Day
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Every 3 days a child dies in an agriculture-related incident and every day at least 30 children are seriously injured. Hardin County is a very agriculture-based community where children encounter the dangers of agriculture life, and it is vital to educate the youth of the county to safely interact with farming equipment, ATVs, animals and plants. Farm Safety Day is an event that teaches elementary students grades 3-5 in Hardin County the importance of being safe in their community, at home and on the farm. This event is in conjunction with the Hardin County ANR and 4-H Agents, and multiple other community organizations. The event includes several stations including electricity, firearms, water, lawn equipment, dog, ATV, fire, edible plants, and chemical look-a-likes. The event was run by around 34 volunteers and was presented to 192 students at Cecilia Valley Elementary school in the fall of 2024. Students were able to reflect on their time at this event and concluded that they enjoyed each station and each were able to learn something new that kept them safe. Students learned valuable life lessons to keep them safe in several situations and got to meet with community members that they might encounter if any of these emergency scenarios were to occur in real life.
