According to the Journal of Extension, "Agricultural literacy is important to the future of our nation and the discipline of agriculture" (Frick & Spotanski, 1990, p. 6). Because the majority of the public is now almost completely removed from agriculture in their daily lives, it is of utmost importance that best practices in agricultural education are identified to ensure agricultural literacy is maintained in future generations of Americans.”
The Madison County CES understands that there is a lack of youth involvement in agriculture nationwide. There is still a big population of kids who do not know where their milk, eggs, and meat come from before they hit the supermarkets. In an effort to teach agricultural practices and ideas to students, the CES has created a 4-H Farm Field Day.
The CES contacted local farmers, teen 4-H members, Eastern Kentucky farm, and several other community members to come and speak for a two day field day. Each speaker was asked to both bring an animal in their specialist career and talk about its importance to agricultural and the food kids eat. The CES also had other stations that were agricultural based and even health based classes.
The CES offered this field day to the local 3rd grade teachers and their classrooms because it lined up with their academic core content. Over the course of the two days, CES saw over 900 students. Teachers absolutely loved this event and 100% said they are looking forward to it next year because of the content and how well it is organized.
