Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Martin Countians are living in poverty, are food insecure, and are experiencing preventable diseases, such as obesity. In 2013, Martin County residents were considered obese representing 39.3% of the county’s population.

To address this issue, Martin County Extensions 4H and Family & Consumer Sciences program partnered with the Family Resource Centers to host a Day Camp for youth ages 9-18 years. This camp provided hands-on, nutrition education focusing on preparing healthy foods and how to easily incorporate fruits and vegetables into foods. The participants made a Super Food Smoothie with a Fender Blender, which is a bike that makes the smoothie by pedaling. In addition to learning about healthier food options, the participants learned about the importance of physical activity.

As a result of this program, 67 youth participants learned how to create a smoothie, how to easily incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into a snack or a meal and understand the importance of daily physical activity. 90% of participants stated they liked the taste of the smoothie and 80% of participants stated they would make the Super Food Smoothies at home.
