Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the 2022 Global Nutrition Report, over 60% of the population in Belize, are overweight and 30% obese. In 2023, 34.6% of adult women and 19% of adult men were obese. Obesity in children under five years is also a concern, with 7% of children affected. The Belize Ministry of Health & Wellness has launched the National Nutrition Policy, which aims to increase awareness and promote healthy Belize. One of the goals is to provide nutrition education through community health initiatives and promote minimally processed and fresh products linked to better nutrition and healthy diets. Additionally, a healthy meal at the primary and secondary school levels is included in the initiative.

In an effort to assist in the Belizean effort to promote healthier eating habits, Extension agents and specialists from the University of Kentucky took the opportunity to provide an invaluable nutrition education program to the community at the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative in the Cayo District during a study tour of the region.  The exchange of nutrition education included information on reducing the consumption of processed packaged foods, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, serving sizes, and the nutritional needs of individuals and increasing physical activity.

The impact of the nutrition education program on the Mayan community was immediately well received and the participants took action.

As a result of the program, the Santa Elena Primary school, (with an enrollment of 1000 students) implemented a Healthy Wednesday Initiative within days of the conclusion of the program. The goal was to promote healthy eating habits among their students and teachers and create a supportive environment for making nutritious choices.  It was requested that students and staff refrain from bringing unhealthy snacks and encouraged to bring fruits and vegetables every Wednesday.
