Baking is an art as well as a science. It is precise as well as intuitive. The ingredients that go into baking are simple—flour, leavening agents, liquid, salt, and others. When combined, these ingredients form something wonderfully complex and delicious. Recipes are often passed down through generations; but the skill is not. Because of recent the pandemic, more people have turned to baking. Because of the interest, the Todd County FCS Agent taught two “Ready, Set, Bake--Scones” classes to help others learn the art of and develop skills for baking.
A total of 22 participants completed an end of the workshop evaluation. Of those answering the survey, 95% agreed they had a better understanding of the role ingredients play in baking; 100% better understood how to practice food safety when using raw flour; 100% better understood how to make a scones; and 100% planned to make scones in the future.
Two participants said they learned the proper way for measure flour; one person commented they learned more about expiration dates on shelf items and the importance of using the proper tools and ingredients.
The baking class was a success and participants asked for more baking classes in the future.
