Mountain Comprehensive Care has locations throughout the state of Kentucky where they serve both youth and adults who need addiction services, behavioral health, crisis services, developmental/intellectual disability services and more. Powell County is fortunate to have a Mountain Comp Care Center in the community. Many adults and youth utilize the services at the Powell County Mountain Comp Care which affords them the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs. The coordinator from MCC contacted the Powell County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) Assistant in hopes to partner up to provide nutrition education to their youth clients.
The SNAP-Ed Assistant scheduled four sessions with the youth group during which she utilized the Teen Cuisine curriculum to provide fun and engaging nutrition programming. 12 youth attended the class and had the opportunity to prepare their own whole wheat pizzas as well as fruit and yogurt parfaits. The Program Assistant provided kiwi for the parfaits and found out that none of the youth participants had tried kiwi before! All 12 youth participants added the kiwi to their parfait and loved it! For the whole wheat pizzas, pineapple was provided for the youth to try on their pizza. All placed at least one piece of pineapple on a portion of their pizza. Eight out of 12 youth participants stated they enjoyed the taste of pineapple on their pizza and would try it again!
