Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

This year, the Floyd County Cooperative Extension Office Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program partnered with clientele at The Mountain Center for Recovery and Hope. The Nutrition Education Program’s “Healthy Choices for Every Body” curriculum was utilized. This curriculum serves to teach limited resource adults the importance of healthy eating, along with physical activity. Participants in this group have embraced the idea that maintaining a healthy body is crucial for overall well-being and successful rehabilitation.

Research consistently highlights the benefits of regular physical activity for those in recovery from substance abuse. Engaging in exercise can help reduce cravings, alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and improve mental health. For the men at the Mountain Center for Hope and Recovery, prioritizing physical fitness has had a positive impact on their recovery journeys.

Upon completion of the program, it was found that 77 percent of participants in the men's group had enhanced their physical activity levels. This statistic highlights the group's dedication to their recovery efforts and their understanding that physical well-being is important to the process. Participants have not only strengthened their bodies but also cultivated a sense of purpose essential for maintaining sobriety. The Mountain Center for Hope and Recovery's men's group demonstrates the positive influence of physical activity on individuals in recovery, highlighting the importance of a well-rounded approach to healing and rehabilitation.
