Youth are not getting the financial education which they will need for adulthood. According to the 2008 results of the Jump $tart Coalition Survey among 12th grade students received only an average score of 48.3% average on financial literacy testing. To combat this issue in Breathitt County the 4-H agent for 4-H Youth development implemented the educational programs of Dollars and Sense, and Reality Store to deliver financial literacy, and money management programming to all 4th-8th students in the county. All youth completed a survey after the programs were completed, and 94% of the youth identified that the programs were beneficial, and that they now have a better understanding of financial literacy, and money management for their own lives. One student stated, “I did not realize how expense items are to purchase, and especially how expensive kids are”. The agent feels that these programs were a success, eye opening to the youth in the county. The agent plans to continue to educational experiences in the future, and to provide more financial education to youth in the county when possible.
