Providing proper nutrition is critical to every successful beef cattle operation. 85 Montgomery County beef cattle producers attended and gained knowledge at an educational session that was conducted in November to remind farmers of the importance of meeting their cow herds nutritional needs this coming winter. Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler, University of Kentucky Extension Beef Nutrition specialists shared with the group what the nutritional requirements were for a beef cow at her different stages pregnancy, what quality and quantity of hay and supplementation was needed to meet those requirements, how changes in the stress of weather conditions can change those requirements and finally explaining the short and long term effects on the animal if the proper nutritional requirements are not met. This class was well accepted among all of the producers and has initiated an increase in forage sampling and lead many producers to pre purchase grain and other feed stuffs to supplement their herds this winter.
