In 2012, the total market value of agricultural products sold in Whitley County was $5,382,000. Of the total market value of agricultural products sold, 31.4% was the value of crops and 68.6% was the value of livestock, poultry, and their products. The total farm production expenses (average per farm) was $16,504 compared to $62,002 for the state. · In Whitley County, there were 184 hired farm labor workers on 91 farms. · 92.5% of farms were operated by a family or an individual compared to 91.0% for the state.
Forests cover nearly half the state of Kentucky and are the foundation of a forest sector that is a major economic force in the Commonwealth.
The 2017 estimates for the economic contribution of Kentucky’s forest sector include:
$8.5 billion in direct economic contribution
$13.5 billion in total economic contributions
26,564 jobs in the forest sector and an estimated 60,398 jobs overall
The Kentucky Forest Sector is divided into six sub-sectors:
Logging
Primary Wood Manufacturing
Pulp and Paper
Secondary Wood Manufacturing
Paper Converters
Wood Residue
Each of these sub-sectors is comprised of multiple forest businesses. The wood resources that support Kentucky’s forest sector primarily come from Kentucky’s forests. Each acre of harvested timber is estimated to contribute $20,876 to Kentucky’s economy. Whitley County contributes to all aspects of the forest sector economy in Kentucky.

Whitley County, along with other counties in the state are experiencing climate change related events that effect their farms, families, and community.
