With more time at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, people were looking for new and more effective ways to do things. Many “Green Cleaning” products can be made using ingredients that many people have in their homes. Green cleaning uses products with ingredients that are better for both people and the environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic cleaning has become even more important but cleaning products have become more difficult to find in the local stores. The Cumberland and Wayne County Family and Consumer Sciences agents collaborated to conduct a virtual green cleaning series. The “Great Green Spring Clean” consisted of four lessons: kitchen, bathroom, laundry and furniture. Participants watched the green cleaning recipe video/lesson demonstration and picked up materials from their local extension office to prepare the weekly recipe at home.
In Wayne County, 25 people participated the series. All 25 completed the “Great Green Spring Clean” series and turned in evaluations. According to evaluations:
68% had never used a green cleaning product before the series
96% indicated that they had used the green cleaning recipes at home
100% plan to make their own green cleaning products in the future
92% stated that they had saved money on cleaning products during the month long series
*A total of $210 reported savings
100% indicated that they were likely/very likely to share the information learned with others
